Madhya Pradesh
Madhya Pradesh, in its present form, came into existence on November 1,2000 following its bifurcation to create a new state of Chattisgarh. The undivided Madhya Pradesh was founded on November 1, 1956. Madhya Pradesh, because of its central location in India, has remained a crucible of historical currents from North, South, East and West.
Sanctuary of a hundred gods Exquisite temples. Enchanting mosques. Bathing ghats sanctified with faith. Steeped in divinity, the holy shrines of Madhya Pradesh reflect the triumph of tolerance. Pilgrims come in endless eddies to venerate the gods at Ujjain, Omkareshwar and Maheshwar, the abodes of peace and tranquility. To pay homage at the awe-inspiring mosque at Bhopal. And to seek solace at Chitrakoot - the legendary birthplace of Brahama, Vishnu and Mahesh, where Ram sought shelter during the long years of exile.
WHAT IS IN SHOW-CASE-
CULTURE-A large segment – almost 40 percent - of Madhya Pradesh’s population is tribal. Its four agro-climatic zones have resulted in a most interesting mix of peoples and lifestyles. There are three distinct tribal groups; the largest chunk being that of the Gonds, who once ruled most of the state and after whom Gondwana, the central portion of the state, is named. Western Madhya Pradesh is inhabited by the Bhils, a colourful group of warriors and hunters.
The eastern side of the state is dominated by the Oraons, most of whom have now converted to Christainity. Population is pretty sparse in the tribal areas as the terrain is hilly and difficult. This poses a big problem as far as communications, transport and medical facilities are concerned. Despite the efforts of the government benefits from development programs have been slow to accrue. What is interesting, however, is that the tribals have managed to retain their ethnic identity, customs and rituals despite modernization – this is largely thanks to successive governments that have been extremely sensitive in their dealings with them.
Madhya Pradesh is home to some of India’s leading luminaries like the present prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, thespian Habib Tanvir, noted sarod player Amjad Ali Khan, the nightingale of India Lata Mangeshkar and the painter Maqbool Fida Hussain.
Language-Hindi is the main and the official - language of Madhya Pradesh. Dialects of the language, such as Bundelkhandi, Malwi and Chattisgarhi, are spoken all over the state. Urdu, Marathi, Sindhi, and Gujarati are also commonly spoken here thanks to the mix of people.
Cuisne-The cuisine in Madhya Pradesh varies from region to region. The north and west are mainly wheat-and-meat based, while the wetter south and east are rice and fish dominated.
Gwalior and Indore abound in milk and milk-based preparations. Bhopal produces exquisite meat and fish dishes, of which the spicy rogan josh, delicious korma, luscious keema, all-season favourite biryani pilaf and succulent kababs such as shami and seekh are almost legendary. But heavens dont even think of trying all of these together unless you want to get the stomach upset of the century. They are extremely rich, spicy and creamy dishes.
An interesting dish is the bafla wheat cakes dunked in rich ghee which are eaten with daal a pungent lentil broth. The tongue-tingling sharpness of this combo is moderated by the sweet ladoos that follow it.
Fairs & Festival-While the traditional religious festivals of the Hindus, Muslims and other communities are celebrated in Madhya Pradesh as enthusiastically as in the rest of India, it is the tribal fairs and festivals of Madhya Pradesh, which are a celebration of the ethnic life-styles of the colourful tribes of the land. The tribal festivals in Jhabua are marked by carefree revelry, drinking bouts and exotic entertainment like cock-fighting, uninhibited dancing, etc. The casual visitor often fails to appreciate adequately the genuine and strong tradition of democracy in tribal society, the harmonious living with nature, the respected status accorded to women, the amicable sharing of the community resources.
Among the cultural festivals of Madhya Pradesh, the Khajuraho Festival of Dances and the Tansen Music Festival in Gwalior are poignant celebrations of Indian classical dance and music.
Some of them are-Madai Festival,Bhagoriya Festival,Dusshera of Bastar,The Fair of Nagaji
WILD-LIFE-Madhya Pradesh is a pioneer state in the national movement for conservation of flora and fauna. Conservation oriented legal proviso were made in the erstwhile Acts regulating hunting of game -birds and wild animals. In tune with the national consciousness towards conservation of flora and fauna the state government began setting up a network of in-situ conservation areas national parks and sanctuaries under the provisions of the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972. There are 9 National Parks and 25 Sanctuaries spread over an area of 10,862 sq. km constituting 11.40% of the total forest area and 3.52% of the geographical area of the state. Efforts are under way to increase the Protected Area network to 15% of the forest or 5% of the geographical area as suggested by State Wildlife Board.
